DIY Unifix Cube Spelling Center

Don’t use those Unifix cubes just for math.  With the flick of a Sharpie, you have a great spelling center.

Items to Gather:

  • Unifix cubes
  • Sharpie permanent marker

1.  Sort your Unifix cubes by color for making spelling cubes.  I use red for vowels, blue for consonants, yellow for blends, orange for vowel pairs, and green for consonant digraphs.

2.  With a permanent marker write the letters on the Unifix cubes so they can be put together.

3.  Make sure you write the letters so the words can be made from left to right.

4.  Put the cubes in your spelling center with your spelling words and let the fun begin.

Other Tips/Suggestions

These cubes are so fun it will quickly become a favorite spelling center as kids love to build their words.  The color-coded letters also encourage student’s to make new words and experiment with putting together consonants, blends, vowels, and digraphs to see what they can make.
